Benchmarking Species Diversification in Global Aquaculture. FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Technical Paper No. 605

The publication Benchmarking species diversification in global aquaculture is a technical paper under the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Division’s initiative on the World Aquaculture Performance Indicators (WAPI). 

The document examines the status and trends of species diversification in global aquaculture and develops a benchmarking system to examine species diversification patterns in around 200 countries over a period of three decades (1988–2018) in order to provide information and insights to facilitate evidence-based policy and planning in sustainable aquaculture development.

A Guide to Recirculation Aquaculture

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Eurofish International Organisation published a guide to recirculation aquaculture, based on the experience of one of the foremost experts in this area, Jacob Bregnballe from the AKVA group.

The guide is intended as a useful tool for fish farmers who are considering converting to recirculation systems, by: 

• introducing the technology and the methods of management;
• advising on good practice shifting to recirculation aquaculture;
• addressing running a recirculation system, staff education and training;
• providing case stories from different recirculation projects.

Guidelines in Support of Social Scceptability for Sustainable Aquaculture Development

The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) published a document presenting the guidelines in support of social acceptability for sustainable aquaculture development. 

The publication aims to provide Mediterranean and Black Sea countries with recommendations for improving the social acceptability and sustainable development of the aquaculture sector, identifying the governance, environmental, economic, social and ethical aspects that could influence the social acceptability of aquaculture in the region.

Good Practice: Molin di Bucchio, Italy

An abandoned 18th century aquaculture farm in Tuscany, Italy, was restored with the help of EU funding.

The farm is producing both local and threatened species for ecosystem restoration, such as the Apenine trout (Salmo trutta fario), as well as the production of Rainbow trout for transformation and development of short chain food circuits.

AAC Recommendation on the Circularity of Fish Feed

The Aquaculture Advisory Council (AAC) has published a recommendation on the circularity of fish feed to the European Commission, the EU Member States and the fish feed producers.

2nd International Conference on Aquaculture and Fisheries

The 2nd International Conference on Aquaculture and Fisheries will take place from August 09-10, 2023 in Paris, France.

The conference, organized on the theme “Uncovering innovative technologies for better outcomes in aquaculture and fisheries“, will feature quick presentations, oral lectures, poster presentations and exhibits.

6th International Carp Conference

The 6th International Carp Conference will take place during 31 August- 1 September 2023 in Szarvas, Hungary.

The event will discuss the challenges and opportunities of carp culture, through thematic panel sessions moderated by acknowledged international aquaculture experts and it will also include a visit to HAKI live carp gene bank and experimental infrastructures as well as a fish cooking competition during the 47th MA-HAL Fish Festival.
