Littoral 24: 17th European Coastal Challenge Summit

Littoral 24: 17th European Coastal Challenge Summit, organised by the Professional Association of Romanian Geographers (APGR), the Ovidius University of Constanța, the Coastal & Marine Union (EUCC), the Coastal & Marine Union Germany (EUCC-D) and the University of Bucharest, will take place between 24 – 27 September 2024, in Constanta, Romania.

The event addresses a wide range of important themes, from the effects of climate change to biodiversity preservation and sustainable development. Aquaculture will be covered under the topic of “Perspectives in support of Sustainable Blue Economy through participatory approaches and engagement with the stakeholders”.

International Conference: Current Research on Aquaculture and Fisheries

SciSynpsis is organising an international conference on aquaculture and fisheries in Barcelona, Spain. The conference, having the theme Current Research on Aquaculture and Fisheries, is scheduled to take place during 09-10 September, 2024.

The purpose of the conference is to raise awareness of and support the contributions of artisanal and small-scale fisheries and aquaculture to global sustainable development, particularly their role in food security, nutrition, poverty alleviation, and the sustainability of natural resources.

Aquaculturists, aquaculture technicians, marine biologists, marine scientists, researchers, academicians, students, industry leaders, development managers, aquaculture and fisheries departments, aquaculture associations and societies, business entrepreneurs and related individuals are expected to attend.

Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture

Under the guidance of the Sub-Committee on Aquaculture of the FAO Committee on Fisheries, the Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture (GSA) were created at the request of Members. The goal of the GSA is to support Members and other stakeholders in the implementation of the 1995 Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries by providing a comprehensive framework for the management and development of sustainable aquaculture.

The Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture contain the following 3 sections:

  • vision, objectives, scope and guiding principles;
  • guidelines for promoting sustainable aquaculture;
  • implementation and monitoring.

They GSA are designed to adapt to various contexts and to facilitate the development of sustainable aquaculture techniques tailored to local conditions. They are meant to be periodically updated in order to reflect new advancements and emerging issues in the aquaculture sector.

Inspire – Restorative Aquaculture Course

EIT FOOD is organising a 3-week intensive programme providing training and theory in seaweed farming, finfish, shellfish and algae biology, culturing, growth and molecular and metabolite analysis. The Inspire Restorative Aquaculture Course will take place from the 23rd September until the 25th October 2024, led by The Seaweed Academy at SAMS, UK in partnership with the Polish Academy of Science.

Although no formal qualifications are required, attendance is based on an application containing a description of the delegates’ reasons to attend the course. Ideally, the organisers are looking for Masters Students, PhD students, Posts-Docs, young professionals or aspiring entrepreneurs interested in aquaculture.

The course will be held in person at SAMS in Oban, Scotland. Prior to and following the in-person event, some content will be delivered online.

AQUA 2024

AQUA 2024 will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, between 26-30 August, 2024. The AQUA events, co-organised by the European Aquaculture Society (EAS) and the World Aquaculture Society (WAS), take place every six years, previous events being held in Nice (2000), Florence (2006), Prague (2012) and Montpellier (2018).

AQUA 2024 will include a scientific conference, trade exhibition, industry forums, workshops, student events and receptions, highlighting the latest aquaculture research and innovation to support continued growth of this food production sector.
